Latvian National team currently holds 136 position in the FIFA ranking and plays in UEFA Nations League C. In 2024 edition it will face Armenia, Faroe Islands and North Macedonia to compete for the place in League B. National team is coached by Italian manager Paolo Nicolato. For Nicolato, who is 57 years old, it is the first experience with a senior National Team. He previously led Italian U-21 national team. Nicolato was appointed in February 2024, after the dismissal of the previous coach, Latvian specialist Dainis Kazakevičs, who managed Latvia from 2020.
Latvian club football structure consists of 4 leagues. 10 professional and semi-professional clubs compete in the highest tier – Tonybet Virsliga. Current map of the League includes almost all major Latvian cities: Riga, Daugavpils, Liepaja, Valmiera, Jelgava and Tukums. Two Riga clubs – RFS and Riga FC are Real and Barcelona of the Latvian football. Riga city derbies played between these two teams are considered the biggest rivalry in Latvian sport and attract major interest both from spectators and medias. Last 4 matches at Skonto stadium (Riga FC home ground) were attended by at least 4000 spectators.
